In the past few years, Azerbaijan has been experiencing a transformative period marked by a significant socio-economic development. The country's international standing has notably risen, boosted by the successful construction of a modern socio-economic infrastructure.
Amidst global technological revolutions driving heightened competition among nations, Azerbaijan has prioritized embracing state-of-the-art technologies to ensure sustainable growth and prosperity. Azerbaijan 2030: National Priorities for Socio-Economic Development underscores pivotal areas such as modern innovations, competitive human capital, and the creation of a dynamic, inclusive society founded on social justice. This comprehensive plan encompasses deep digitalization, active adoption of new technologies, and rapid advancements in cutting-edge sectors.
Addressing the digital divide, Azerbaijan has embarked on the large-scale Online Azerbaijan project. Implemented by the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport, this initiative aims to enhance population well-being by providing high-speed internet access and innovative solutions, particularly in remote areas. Operating on a public-private partnership model, the project fosters collaboration between sectors, guiding us toward a digitally inclusive society where technological opportunities are accessible to everyone, regardless of geographic location or economic status.
The implementation of the Online Azerbaijan project involves a strategic shift towards Gigabit Passive Optical Networks (GPON) technology. This cutting-edge technology replaces traditional ADSL equipment with GPON infrastructure, incorporating an advanced IMS platform and optical cables. GPON technology facilitates lightning-fast internet speeds of up to 1 Gbit/s, significantly enhancing service quality and enabling the provision of value-added services like IPTV.
The impact of the Online Azerbaijan project is already tangible, as it has led to a rapid increase in broadband internet access, soaring from a mere 8% in the end of 2020 to an impressive 74,2% currently among existing households and businesses. This remarkable progress underscores the project's effectiveness in bridging the digital divide and bringing modern connectivity to a significant portion of the population.
Building on this success, in the first three months of 2024 alone, over 251 thousand households and businesses gained access to broadband internet, with approximately 2.16 million entities now covered by broadband services. About 39.4% of the project's efforts have been directed towards rural areas and settlements. As a result, 855.9 thousand households and businesses in those areas now have access to high-speed internet. Leveraging GPON technology, the project has achieved significant coverage, benefiting citizens across urban and rural areas alike.
Notably, according to Ookla's March report, the average speed of broadband internet in Azerbaijan has increased over the past 12 months, surpassing 38.32 Mbit/s on average. This growth reflects an impressive 38% year-on-year increase. Such progress is poised to surmount longstanding barriers across sectors like education, health, government services, and trade by improving data transport, exchange, and storage facilities. These advancements are expected to act as a catalyst for introducing innovative services and applications, fueling growth, and creating new opportunities.
Looking ahead, the Online Azerbaijan project is on track for completion by the end of 2024. The focus remains on expanding high-speed and broadband internet services to cities and villages, ensuring equitable access to digital resources. Through innovative partnerships and technological advancements, Azerbaijan is poised to continue its digital revolution, fostering a dynamic, inclusive society where every citizen can thrive in the digital age
